Rivermouth Dunes
This walk begins on a windy afternoon. You venture out along a man-made breakwater; balancing between the Whanganui river in flood and the Tasman Sea. A bright and pleasant surprise awaits you at the the tip.
You return and descend to the beach, briefly walking along the waterline before turning inland.
The glittering black sand dunes are glorious in the winter light, punctuated with silvery crops of endemic spinifex grass. Enjoy the sheltered silence as you follow various tracks in the sand up onto a soft ridge with views to the north.
Finally return along an idyllic sandy gully to the beach and walk north while taking in the sparkling ocean and breaking waves.
