Okere Falls, Rotorua
This walk follows the beautiful Kaituna river as it flows north from Lake Rotoiti through valleys rich with birdsong.
Your first stop is Okere Falls, a world renowned waterfall for white water rafting. You wind through the forest from there, meeting towering trees and native bird-life, before descending to the remarkable Tutea falls.
Tutea falls (named after chief Tutea, a historic Rangatira from this area) are accessed by Hinemoa's steps: a flight of tunneled steps hewn from the stone by hand centuries ago. The steps take you down to Tutea's cave and a viewing area on the banks of the emerald-green plunge pool.
After Tutea falls you continue north until a hidden opportunity to head off track leads down to the river for a closer look.
A boardwalk leads to a bridge across the Kaituna river, and further on a view of trout pool where you bid the river farewell.
